Dr. Kim Oppenheimer
Licensed Psychologist
Dr. Oppenheimer is a clinical psychologist with over 25 years experience working with individuals, couples, and families. She has specialized training in performing child custody and parental fitness evaluations. In her psychotherapy practice, she has special interests in divorce adjustment, marital therapy, mother-daughter relationships, work-place stress, and anxiety disorders.
Dr. Oppenheimer believes that symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, occur when there is not a good fit between the individual and his or her environment, such as in a relationship or a job. Thus, her orientation to therapy is a blending of family systems and cognitive-behavioral theories. She believes that change occurs within the context of a collaborative, trusting, safe, and supportive enviornment. Her style is active and direct, gives feedback, as well as makes suggestions for things to work on between sessions.
Dr. Oppenheimer has published numerous research articles in professional journals and has many peer reviewed presentations, specifically in the areas of divorce adjustment and anxiety disorders. Prior to full-time private practice, Dr. Oppenheimer was an Associate Professor of Psychology at Georgia State University. She was also an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia. In this role, she was Director of Student Health Psychological Services and Associate Director of Behavioral Medicine. Currently, she is co-owner of Atlanta Psych Consultants, LLC.
Dr. Oppenheimer received her Ph.D. in 1985 from the University of South Carolina in Clinical-Community Psychology, and completed her internship at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Palo Alto, California. She received her M.S. degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University and her B.A. degree with honors in Psychology from Florida State University.
